Conditions Treated by Liver Transplant
Patients may need a liver transplant when they have advanced liver disease or liver cancer that cannot be effectively treated with other therapies.
Liver failure can develop suddenly (acute) or progress over time (chronic).
Acute liver failure occurs when the liver rapidly loses its ability to function, often within days or weeks.
Chronic liver failure develops when ongoing liver damage causes scarring, known as cirrhosis, which gradually impairs the liver’s ability to perform its vital functions.
When fatty liver disease, also called MASLD or MASH, is not treated, over time it can cause serious liver damage. If damage leads to cirrhosis or liver failure, a liver transplant may be needed.
