Exploring a New Frontier with the da Vinci® Surgical System Robotic Surgery at The Liver Institute – Dallas, Texas
(Updated Post – View original 8/22/2014 post here.)
Many surgeons today are consistently looking for new, technologically advanced ways to perform procedures in a manner that provides faster recovery and fewer complications than traditional surgical methods. Currently, the da Vinci® Robot System is that answer. At The Liver Institute at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, the surgical team offers numerous, minimally invasive surgical procedures using the robotic system.
How does the daVinci® Robot System work?
A magnified, 3D, high-definition image of the surgical site is displayed at a console housing specially designed surgical instruments. Small incisions allow these miniaturized instruments to be inserted into the body to physically perform the procedure, but your surgeon has control 100% of the time. The surgeon’s movements are mimicked, but more precisely, by the da Vinci® instruments. By using robotic surgery, the surgeon is able to bend and move in more precise ways than their own hands and wrists might allow. Additionally, the enlarged image allows for expanded visibility beyond that of the human eye alone. Therefore, the da Vinci® Robot System provides surgeons an opportunity to perform more intricate and complicated surgical procedures than other traditional minimally invasive methods.
Dr. Alejandro Mejia is one of The Liver Institute’s most highly-skilled surgeons who sees numerous opportunities with the da Vinci® robotic surgery offered in Dallas. “To offer technically advanced surgeries demonstrates Methodists’ leadership in providing patients with the most minimally invasive surgical options. We are truly excited to be a leader today in the surgical treatment of tomorrow,” says Dr. Mejia. Additionally, Dr. Mejia recently had the pleasure of hosting several Latin American surgeons to demonstrate a Pancreaticoduodenectomy, or “Whipple” surgery, using the da Vinci® Surgical System.
